Characteristics of Bluebells Flowers (The Blue Bells)

This flower is very similar to Spanish bluebells. Well, here are the characteristics of bluebells flowers:

  • Bluebells are bulbous, flowering perennials about 50cm tall.
  • Leaves: About 7-25 mm wide, 45 cm long. Smooth, thin and pointed at the ends.
  • Flowers: Up to 20 flowers, sweet-smelling and hanging on a flower stalk that bends to one side. The flowers are bell-shaped and are blue, white and sometimes pink. Each flower has 6 bent petals, has creamy white pollen. The easiest way to tell real bluebells (British bluebells) from other bluebells (Spanish bluebells) is to look at the color of the pollen. If it is creamy white it means real bluebells while if it is another color such as blue or pale green it means it is not bluebells from mainland England.
  • Light purple-blue in color. A genetic mutation can cause the flowers to be white.
  • Flower stem drooping or drooping on one side.
  • The flowers have a strong sweet aroma.

When do bluebells flower? Bluebells flower in mid-April and May. Millions of flowers can bloom in one area, creating a stunning natural appearance.

Where can I see this flower? Half of the population of this flower is found in England. 71% of this flower is found in the forest, around hedgerows and in the field.
